Manchester 250: 3 July 2007

Peel wants Manchester Airport sold off and Droylsden in and out of a jam

Published on July 3rd 2007.

THE RIFT between those for and against congestion charging and additional improvements to Manchester’s transport infrastructure has widened. After mistaken claims in the local press yesterday that drivers will three times for journeys into the city centre, Peel Holdings, have suggested that Manchester Airport should be sold off by the Greater Manchester councils, to pay for improvements. They say this makes more sense then making Manchester a ‘transport guinea pig’. They also deny it has anything to do with their desire to increase a property portfolio, which includes Liverpool, Doncaster and East Midlands airports, as well as The Trafford Centre.

ONE of the most famous brands in British foods, Robertson’s jams, in Droylsden is set close with the loss of more than 250 jobs. Robertson’s jams have been produced in Droylsden for 117 years. New owners, Premier Foods, also intend to close the Sharwoods cooking sauces plant at Wythenshawe with the loss of more than 100 jobs. Production from the factories will be shifted to the south of England.

MORE TALL buildings for the centre of the conurbation are planned with a 31 and 46 storey pair of towers between the River Irwell and Trinity Way in Salford. The towers will be less than a mile from Manchester Town Hall and include an urban park and a five star hotel.

MEANWHILE PLANS to bring Sven Goran Erikson to Manchester City have stalled. The plans will only go ahead if ex-Thai prime minister Shinawatra can deliver a guaranteed £50m transfer kitty.

Of course Peel holdings wants Manchester Airport sold off so they can make a bid for it, just like they are buying up the land around barton airport!! maybe for another lowcost flight path in future years??
