Manchester 250: 28 June 2007

Lowry painting is sold and Lancashire paint a rosy picture.

Published on June 28th 2007.

GREENGATE in Salford is to be transformed into a new urban quarter over the next 15 years providing 5000 homes and a working environment for 4000 people. Planning permission has been granted for the development which will convert the former Exchange Station and derelict land into shops, offices and a hotel. The development will include parks, walkways and a new bridge.

A LOWRY painting has been sold for £602,000 at Bonhams. The oil painting, Industrial Landscape, which was bought for £300 in 1959, was exhibited for the first time in Salford ahead of the auction. The painting depicts a busy street scene with a typical backdrop of factory chimneys.

SIX Macclesfield teenagers have been arrested by police on suspicion of using an internet site to arrange ‘Fight Club’ inspired, boxing matches. The Bebo website had been used to taunt and brag about the arranged bouts, known to the youngsters as ‘fight clubbing,’ after the Hollywood film starring Brad Pitt in which secret fights are arranged. All six youths, aged between 16 and 17 years-old have been released on police bail.

LANCASHIRE beat their Roses rivals in the Twenty20 Cup at Old Trafford. More than 15,000 fans saw Lancashire maintain their 100 per cent home record after Yorkshire collapsed following Lancashire's 143 for nine. Yorkshire slipped to a 30-run defeat with eight balls to spare. The night was celebrated with Manchester music in the intervals including New Order, the Smiths, The Stone Roses, the Buzzcocks and including, bizarrely, Tony Christie’s Amarillo.
