Not so drunk teenagers and Verve get back together

Published on June 27th 2007.

A TRADING STANDARDS survey has revealed that fewer teenagers are drinking regularly in the North West. Those who say they never drink at all has risen from 12% in 2005 to 17% in a poll of 12,000 children. The bad news is that a third of those who use alcohol, drink excessively. Trading Standards said the results suggested a regime of active policing of under-age alcohol sales was starting to work.

HUNDREDS of mourners attended the funeral yesterday of controversial comedian Bernard Manning, who died last week aged 76. Other comedians at the ceremony at Blackley Crematorium in North Manchester included Frank Carson, who read the eulogy at the service. THE LARGEST redundant building in central Manchester, the former London Road Firestation, is set for redevelopment. The 1906 building has been the centre of a long-standing row between the City Council, Piccadilly Partnership and the owner, Britannia Hotels. Sir Howard Bernstein last night, at an event chaired by Manchester Confidential, stated that an agreement should be signed within two months.

GREATER MANCHESTER band, The Verve, from Wigan, are to reform. The band, famous for songs such as Bitter Sweet Symphony, have got back together eight years after they split. Lead singer Richard Ashcroft said: "The Verve - Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Pete Salisbury - were back together. After summer they will return to the studio to complete their album."
