Manchester 250: 26 June 2007

Manchester down the drain and Piccadilly Palaver

Published on June 26th 2007.

UNITED UTILITIES have dismissed stories of traffic chaos over the next two years, following the announcement of replacement works to 43km of nineteenth century sewers. Work is to be carried out on Oxford Road, Deansgate, Great Ancoats Street and Piccadilly from 2 July, next Monday. But a United Utilities spokesperson said, “we’ve ensured that disruption will be minimised”.

THE FUTURE of Piccadilly will be debated today by a high-powered panel. The event is chaired by Manchester Confidential Editor Jonathan Schofield. Panellists include Chris Oglesby, David Partridge, Mark Ruby, Wayne Mellor, Michael Taylor, David Toulsen- Burke and Jackie Williams, the bosses of, respectively, Bruntwood, Argent, Kro Bars, Inacity, Insider Magazine, City Inn and Manchester’s Bank of New York. Knight of the Realm, Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive of Manchester, will be joining the debate too.

MANCHESTER BASED newspapers, the Daily and Sunday Sport could be sold on the UK stock market as part of a £60m deal. The papers are the only daily nationals based in Manchester, with around 70 people working at the former Daily Express building in Ancoats. The sale could be complete within four to six weeks.

UEFA has agreed to have fewer riot police at international football matches following the violence involving United fans in Rome. In a review by the Home Office and UEFA it has been decided that riot police will be replaced with the use of stewards. Sports Minister Richard Caborn said: “Hopefully scenes witnessed in Rome will become a thing of the past.”
