The International Festival to go ahead in 2009 and third terror suspect released

Published on July 26th 2007.

MANCHESTER International Festival has been approved to go ahead in 2009 after this year’s inaugural event. The City Council have voted to continue to support the Festival which gained huge critical acclaim from the world’s press with several sell out productions. The Los Angeles Times said: ‘The gloomy, angry, English city that spawned rock icons is now a vibrant indie scene of cafes and culture and its musical heart still beats on.’ Manchester Confidential has an exclusive interview with Alex Poots, the Festival Director, tomorrow.

ALL THREE men arrested by anti-terror police following a ‘potential threat’ tip-off have been released without charge. The men were arrested on July 18 after officers from Greater Manchester Police's Counter Terrorism Unit were alerted to suspected terrorist activity. The first suspect was released last Friday and the second on Thursday.

A PARAMEDIC crew has come under attack and was pelted with stones as they tried to treat an elderly man who had suffered a heart attack. At one stage the crew was forced to leave the scene as three youths shouted abuse and threw stones. Widower 84-year-old Norman Bell from Merseyside who had been bowling at a social club in Ashton-in-Makerfield later died in hospital.

THE DUKE of Lancaster's Regiment, which lost eight of its soldiers in a recent tour of duty in Iraq, has been given the Freedom of the City of Manchester. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Kenyon said it was a "perfect" way for the returning soldiers to thank their families and friends.
