More beer, B of the Bang and congestion charging for the smaller towns

CONTROVERSIAL PLANS to improve the transport infrastructure around Manchester partially through congestion charging might spread. Other Greater Manchester towns including Rochdale, Oldham, Altrincham, Stockport and Bolton might also introduce limited peak time schemes around their centres. This would only happen some years after the beginning of the scheme which has still to gain approval from the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities and Parliament.

TOM HEATHERWICK the 36 year-old sculptor/engineer behind one of the great Manchester public artworks, B of the Bang, has received an honorary doctorate from Manchester Metropolitan University, his former university. Despite being over-budget, delays in construction and technical difficulties, B of the Bang, which is next to the City of Manchester Stadium, is considered a pioneering work in British art. Heatherwick has also worked elsewhere in the UK and internationally.

HYDES brewery in Moss Side Manchester is set to expand. After posting profits of £1.9m the company is looking to acquire 20 more sites to bring the amount of pubs owned to close to a 100. Hydes is one of four major family brewers in the Manchester region, the others being Holts, JW Lees and Robinsons - far more than in any other UK city.

A POST-MORTEM examination is to be carried out on a man found unconscious outside an Indian restaurant in Heaton Moor. Jason Knowles, 36, of Harcourt Street in Reddish, was found slumped outside the Kushoom Koly restaurant on Shaw Road on 6 July and died at the Royal Preston Hospital on 21 July.
