Manchester 250: 20 July 2007

Dpercussion to die another day and yes to Congestion Charging

Published on July 20th 2007.

AN INDEPENDENT POLL has revealed that a majority of Greater Mancunians are in favour of the transport improvements associated with Congestion Charging. 57% agreed with a road pricing scheme as long as the £3bn package of benefits were in place at the time of road pricing. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities will have a meeting next week to decide whether they will now go to the government to ask for £1.2bn grant, and provision to borrow £1.8bn

DPERCUSSION will die after the tenth celebration festival on 4 August in Castlefield. The urban music festival, the largest of its kind in the UK, has faced financial difficulties before but this year a last minute withdrawal of promised money from the Arts Council has nearly scuppered the 4 August event. This another blow for Castlefield, the future of which will be debated on 1 August in a Manchester Confidential special debate.

HAS THE LABOUR PARTY gone to pot, people are asking after seven more ministers have admitted smoking cannabis in their youth - this follows yesterdays’ revelations about Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. Local MPs Hazel Blears and Ruth Kelly are two of the MPs who have admitted to being pot smokers in their early years.

MANCHESTER job losses have been announced with 1,000 staff being axed from the Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) as it tries to cut costs. Although it’s not been revealed where the job cuts will take place, the majority of the losses are expected to be in Manchester.

Jo, the debate will be on 1 August, meeting at 6pm, start of the debate at 6.30pm and finish at 8pm. Venue is to be confirmed but will be in Castlefield itself. Cllr Pat Karney and freelance writer Phil Griffin have agreed to be on the panel and I will chair. The idea of the meeting is to look ahead to see what we can do with Castlefield, rather than look back.
