Manchester 250: 13 June 2007

Hazel Blear’s HQ destroyed and so is Michael Vaughan

Published on June 13th 2007.

SALFORD MP, Hazel Blears has had her HQ destroyed in an explosion in London. Blears was in the offices at the time and was using the building as her campaign headquarters in her bid to become Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. A man believed to be a builder was trapped in the explosion. Blears has received various donations into her fighting fund, some locally, such as £10,000 from Salford businessman John Wilkinson who owns Salford Reds rugby league club.

MANCHESTER’S main rival for the £3bn windfall from congestion charging may pull out. The West Midlands authorities are no longer sure if they want to impose charges on people using their roads. Manchester’s bid will depend on community and business support but has been approved by the Greater Manchester councils.

A POLICEMAN was injured in a motorcycle accident on the East Lancs and has been taken to Hope Hospital with serious injuries. He was taking part in an approved training course.

ENGLAND cricket captain Michael Vaughan has been accused of hypocrisy after being discovered extremely drunk outside Manchester’s Hilton Hotel following England’s victory over the West Indies at Old Trafford. One eye-witness said he looked ‘destroyed’. Vaughan criticised injured team-mate Andrew Flintoff for his drunken behaviour during the recent Cricket World Cup. Flintoff was sacked as team vice-captain.

CITY fans are furious with midfielder Joey Barton following his demands for £300,000 compensation. He says he is owed this after the club agreed to transfer him to Newcastle without consultation.

Fortunately no one really takes any notice of those petitions!

You can also demonstrate that you have an open mind by listening to the debate on congestion charges before putting your name to a meaningless petition. Have seen the garbage that gets put up there?
