Manchester 250: 12 June 2007

Explosion in Bolton and City suitor's millions frozen...

Published on June 12th 2007.

A woman has been rescued from a fire in the Halliwell area of Bolton following an explosion, which blew the roof off a house at 2am this morning. Five people were taken to hospital and are being treated for minor injuries including burns to hands and smoke inhalation. Three houses were damaged and one destroyed.

Traffic wardens in Manchester have been given extended powers to tackle a number of environmental issues. They can now authorise fines of up to £80 for offences such as littering and leaving car engines running unnecessarily. Town Hall chiefs have said that policing illegal parking will still remain the number one priority of the city's traffic wardens. The new powers will be tested by twelve traffic wardens as part of a six-month trial.

Manchester City’s hopes of being pumped full of Thai millions have been put on hold following reports that the bank accounts of the former Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, have been frozen. The multi-millionaire businessman is banned from Thai politics and is living in exile in London. A spokesman for Shinawatra said: “This situation will not affect the takeover bid.”

Restoration of the Victoria Baths in Longsight has finally got underway with the clock tower of the 101 year-old baths on its way to York to be repaired. Generations of people used the original baths which closed in 1993. This is the first visible sign of the £20m restoration of the landmark building which won BBC two’s Restoration series back in 2003.

That Victoria Baths thing is a joke. It advertises itself as a rescue of a people's building but will end up as a middle-class sauna and gym pricing all the type of people who used to use it out of the water. Waste of money. Knock the bloody ugly thing down.
