Manchester 250: 11 June 2007

An unholy row at the Cathedral and Salford divided...

Published on June 11th 2007.

The Church of England is furious over the use by Sony of Manchester Cathedral as a shoot-em-up background to a violent computer game. The game called Resistance: Fall of Man has been described as ‘desecration’ and includes scenes of people being blown apart on the hallowed ground. Sony didn’t ask for permission to take pictures in the building and paid no fee. The Cathedral wants an apology and financial damages from Sony to go to organisations associated with victims of Manchester gun crime.

The city’s bid for the super-casino faces a new threat. Rejected by the House of Lords in March, the British Casino Association have challenged the Government’s decision to build a super-casino, plus 16 smaller regional casinos, in the High Court, claiming it threatens existing businesses. Richard Caborn, minister in charge of gambling, is currently considering how to move the original super-casino proposals forward.

Salford splits. On one side are supporters of a £100m scheme for a racecourse at the M60/M62 junction, including a grandstand, hotel and golf course. On the other are locals opposed to development on Green Belt land. Unsurprisingly Salford bookie, Fred Done, backs the scheme.

Two boys were shot in Moss Side on Sunday by men in a driving school car stolen at gunpoint. The boys, aged 16 and 17, escaped with minor injuries.

Rumours at Old Trafford suggest Argentinian midfielder Carlos Tevez, currently at West Ham, may join Manchester United. At the neighbouring cricket ground England finished off the West Indies - just.

all definitely. I wanted to say how great Mark E smith is so frustrating when cant post. I post on other sites also and debates often get going between posters unrelated to subject matter.

Margaret and Mr/Mrs Anonymous, we're having a meeting to discuss this issue tomorrow morning. Our reasons for not putting comment facilities on every story has been neither commercial nor part of a dark sinister plot. Rather that we thought some articles needed the comment option more than others. Thanks for your comments. Watch this space and we'll get back to you tomorrow.

Hi Anon, we are debating this at the moment. We were trying to use the comments on targeted articles rather than a general spread to focus debates. Do you suggest or prefer a comment option on all articles?

MargaretJune 11th 2007.

I find it a bit sinister- there is no way only selectively giving your audience a comment option can encourage more debate- only curtail it. I haven't seen this on any other site and you are missing the point of the internet if you think you can dictate to people what they can and cannot comment on. Unless there is another reason rather than the very weak-sounding 'focusing debate'? A more commercially motivated one, perhaps? People aren't stupid you know...
