Extra baggage, a plague of rats and United fans make the effort: Monday 7 January

City news in 250 words

Published on January 7th 2008.

PASSENGERS at Manchester Airport can take two pieces of hand luggage on flights as of today. The airport is one of 22 nationwide to ease restrictions on cabin luggage. However, there are still certain airlines who are keeping the one-bag limit so it is advised that passengers check before flying. Size limits on liquids and cabin baggage will also still apply.

RATS are infesting Manchester according to new reports. Pest controllers have seen a 100 per cent increase in call-outs for rat infestations in the city, with Chinatown having the biggest problem. The rodents forage for waste food in the alleyways where restaurants discard rubbish. Experts estimate that there are now 70m rats in Britain following a surge in recent years.

MODIFIED GUNS are to be outlawed in the UK. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has spoken out about plans for taking de-activated firearms completely out of circulation. The restriction is aimed at stopping shootings in city’s such as Manchester, where gun crime can be a major problem. It is believed there are as many as 120,000 older weapons on the streets of Britain.

WAYNE ROONEY has praised the away fans for leading United to victory with their support against Aston Villa. Rooney told MUTV: “Some teams struggle to fill the away end in a Premier League match. Obviously we get more tickets in the Cup but we’ve filled it again. It’s a fantastic effort from the fans. I enjoy playing at Villa Park and we’ve certainly deserved our wins here.”
