STILETTO HEEL ATTACK WOMAN CLEARED:
Staci Hargreaves from Stalybridge, Tameside, kicked her 3-inch stiletto heel through her boyfriend Gavin Taylor's eye during an argument in a taxi and punctured his brain. She has been cleared of all charges after the jury said there was no evidence to show she wasn't acting in self-defence. Taylor suffered life-threatening injuries and was in hospital for a month.

GREEN LIGHT FOR TRAM EXTENSION PLANS: Local authorities have agreed to invest £0.5bn on three extensions, and 14 new trams will be ordered to run the new routes. Trams running to Oldham and Rochdale town centres are expected by spring 2014 and trams to Manchester Airport, which will be partly funded by the airport, are expected by 2016.

NURSING HOME WORKER STEALS FROM ELDERLY: Jaspal Sandhar stole from £50,000 from three elderly residents at The Willows Nursing Home in Higher Broughton, Salford, which is owned by one of Sandhar's relatives. He used the money to fund his cocaine habit, hire expensive cars, buy designer clothes and gamble at casinos. Sandhar admitted three counts of fraud by false representation between October 2008 and April this year.

WASTE RECYCLING PLANT FIRE: A large fire broke out at the plant on Station Road in Blackrod, Bolton, just before 8pm yesterday. About 60 firefighters were sent to the site, which is near the M61. The fire caused clouds of black smoke to drift over the motorway. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Out of the window weather forecast: The St. Swithin's Day legend is starting to seem a lot less like a myth and a lot more like the truth.
