LOCAL LIBYAN MAN JOINS REBELS’ FIGHT: A man known only as Rashad has left Manchester to return home to Libya to fight against Colonel Gaddafi’s regime. Despite not telling his Manchester-based parents of his decision, Rashad said he saw the move as the ‘best thing’ for him and his home country. Manchester is home to the UK’s largest Libyan community and anecdotal evidence from Libya also suggests other locals have also joined the rebels.

RECORD PROFITS FOR CO-OP: The Co-operative’s sales and profits rose almost 50 per cent in 2010, hitting £545.7m, according to latest accounts. Group sales rose by almost 10 per cent to £13.7bn. With new plans to build NOMA, the area around its new headquarters, the company said it remained ‘wary’ about challenging trading conditions for the rest of the year.

CHAOS PREDICTED FOR FA CUP SEMI WEEKEND: Sir Alex Ferguson has said he expects ‘absolute chaos’ on Saturday 16 April, when City play United at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final. The following day, Bolton, Stoke and Liverpool fans will also be heading to the capital. Ferguson added “I don’t think the cost of people travelling down to Wembley is considered”.

ELEPHANT AT CENTRE OF POLICE INVESTIGATION: Anne, an Asian elephant, is the focus of a police inquiry after footage of a circus worker beating her was filmed by pressure group Animal Defenders International. The elephant was part of Bobby Roberts’ Super Circus, which opens in Knutsford today, but plans are now underway to rehouse it.

Fact of the day: Manchester formally gained city status of 29 March 1853.
