GIRL CRUSHED TO DEATH BY ELECTRONIC GATES: A six-year-old girl has died after becoming trapped in a set of electronic gates in Moss Side. Semelia Campbell was playing with her best friend by the entrance of flats off Maine Road on Monday, when she became pinned against a brick post as the motorised gate closed. Her mum and neighbours tried to free her as they waited for the emergency services. She was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary but died from her injuries a short time later.

THE MOST DANGEROUS ROAD IN BRITAIN is the A536 A537 between Macclesfield, Cheshire, and Buxton, Derbyshire, according to a report by charity the Road Safety Foundation. The charity wants government spending to be targeted at improving safety on the most dangerous roads.

ANOTHER CHILD ABDUCTION ATTEMPT IN STOCKPORT: An eight-year-old boy was approached by a man in a car park at Brinnington Health Centre in Brinnington Road on Monday evening. The man asked the boy if he wanted a Nintendo DS and when he refused, the man grabbed hold of his wrist. Luckily the boy managed to escape. The incident comes days after a man tried to abduct a girl in Romiley although police are not linking the two incidents at this stage.

ACTRESS JESSIE WALLACE, known for her role as Kat Slater in Eastenders, was among the cast in Manchester yesterday filming a new BBC drama about the birth in 1960 of Britain’s longest-running soap, Coronation Street. Wallace will play Corrie's Pat Phoenix.
