City news in 250 words: Wednesday 27 April

POLICE are investigating a large fight in Moss Side last night. The fight broke out in Gerry Wheale Square at around 8pm. Shortly afterwards, a green Ford Focus, ‘believed to have been involved in the fight’ (did it throw the first punch or something? Ed), was found abandoned in nearby Alexandra Avenue. Three youths have been arrested over the incident.

SATURDAY 30 April will feature a circus themed extravaganza held at Afflecks, Manchester’s alternative shopping emporium in the Northern Quarter, formerly known as Afflecks Palace. It will be the third ‘Afflecks day’ celebration and is an opportunity for workers there to thank customers and supporters over the last year. On the day there will be live music, art exhibitions, a poetry corner and 3-minute theatres. The majority of stalls will be offering a 10% discount.

ALLEGATIONS of electoral malpractice have been made by residents in some parts of Rochdale. The council has received a number of reports of large groups of people attempting to pressure people into handing over uncompleted postal votes. Colin Lambert, leader of the Labour-run council, said "People clearly feel intimidated and threatened." Police have said the actions are illegal and can lead to imprisonment.

UNITED coasted through the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against German team Schalke last night. Goals from Giggs and Rooney put paid to stiff resistance from Manuel Neuer, the Schalke keeper. The result puts United on course for a Wembley Champions League Final against either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

This week 1853 Charlotte Bronte visited Manchester, staying with Elizabeth Gaskell who described her as having a nervous dread of strangers.
