City news in 250 words: Wednesday 20 October

ROONEY WANTS TO LEAVE UNITED: It has been confirmed by Sir Alex Ferguson that Wayne Rooney wants to leave the club after six years. Ferguson has denied the rumours that the two had fallen out saying that he was “bemused” at Rooney's decision. Rooney's ankle injury means that he won't be playing in Wednesday's Champions League home game and he is yet to comment about the situation.

CAMERON AXES NIMROD ORDER: Up to 1300 jobs are at risk at the BAE sites in Woodford and Chadderton, Oldham. The Prime Minister has announced that the order for the Nimrod aircrafts was being cancelled. Staff fear the sites could close eighteen months earlier than originally planned but BAE have not confirmed any job cuts, saying it was premature speculation.

MASKED MEN ROB ELDERLY WOMAN AT HOME: An 81 year old woman was left with minor injuries after three men broke into her Rochdale home last Thursday. The woman was in bed at the time of the break in, in which jewellery of great sentimental value was stolen. Witnesses are urged to contact Greater Manchester Police.

GAP YEAR TRAGEDY FOR STOCKPORT STUDENT: James Raphael, 24, from Cheadle Hulme fell to his death from a balcony at the Hotel Royal Grand in Kathmandu, Nepal. He had returned from a night out with friends and found himself locked on the balcony when he tried to climb through a window and slipped. He was taken to a local hospital but doctors were unable to save him.

Out of the window weather forecast: Clear skies and the sun has made a very welcome return after the downpours of yesterday.
