CHILD’S CASE POORLY MANAGED: Manchester Safeguarding Children’s Board has criticised the handling of a case in which a 13-month-old boy died from neglect. Alex Sutherland was found dead at his home in Baguley, Wythenshawe in November 2009 with his mother, Tracy Sutherland, admitting neglect last April. The Board’s review found that the case was “poorly managed throughout” and that his neglect could have been predicted and prevented.

ANGER AS TRIAL DISCONTINUED: Cyclist Harry Wilmers, 25, died after being hit by a lorry in Old Trafford in August 2009. The driver of the lorry was due to be trialled at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court for causing death by careless driving but the Crown Prosecution Service has abandoned proceedings because of legal technicalities.

FALL ONTO KNIFE MAY HAVE CAUSED DEATH: A man is believed to have died after falling onto a knife. Police and paramedics were called to Stopes Road, Radcliffe last night. The man, thought to be in his sixties, is yet to be named but was believed to be carrying out work on the roof when he suffered a heart attack and fell onto a knife. Investigations are continuing to establish the exact cause of his death.

1980S SHOE FACTORY WORKERS PLEA: Police are appealing for people who worked at Riverside Works in Crawshawbooth in the mid to late 1980s following the discovery of a skeleton wrapped in blue carpet. The woman’s remains were found on a building site on Angel Meadows, Collyhurst in January last year accompanied by a Natural Style shoe.

Out of the window weather forecast: It’s dull. When does winter finish again?
