City news in 250 words – Wednesday 18 May

THE OLYMPIC FLAME will stop-over in Manchester en route to the London Games. Manchester Council is planning an evening event to celebrate its arrival next year on 23 June. The flame will be carried across the UK by 8,000 torch bearers on its 70-day journey. Councillor Mike Amesbury said it was great news for the city.

A SCHOOLGIRL was raped as she was walking home in Gorton. The 13-year-old was dragged into bushes as she passed through a field between Longsight Road and Butterwick Close on Monday evening. Police said the man, who was black and in his early 20s, ran off before the teenager went home and told her family what had happened. Police have increased their presence in the area.

A MAN has been cleared of murder after serving four years in prison. Tyrone Wong was ordered to serve 27years in 2007 after being found guilty of shooting dead Ernest Gifford in Moss Side. But Mr Wong was acquitted of murder following a re-trial and is due to be released from prison.

The ticker, which mocked the trophy-less decades of rivals Man City, was taken down after the Blues won the FA Cup. Now museum bosses believe it captures the spirit of a rivalry, which is part of the rich sporting tapestry of Britain’s capital of football, and could include it in the collection at Urbis.
