SIX STABBED IN CHINATOWN: A man is in a critical condition after being stabbed in China Town in the early hours of today. Police were called to George Street at 2.20am following reports of a group fighting. Six men were taken to hospital with stab wounds. A 32-year-old man is in a critical condition. George Street has been closed as detectives investigate the incident.

FAKE ARSON AND KIDNAP VICTIM JAILED: Steven Thornley, from Stockport set a van alight and then told police he had been kidnapped, but the story just didn’t add up. Det Insp Kevin Dolan, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Thornley accidentally burnt himself when setting fire to the van and he instantly tried to cover his tracks and attempted to lead my officers down a blind alley, completely wasting a substantial amount of our time and scarce resources.” He has been sentenced to four years.

TRAPPED CHILDREN SCRAWL FOR HELP: Two children, who had been locked in a car in stifling conditions in Rochdale last week, scrawled ‘help’ in the condensation of the car window. The boy, six, and his 10-year-old sister were noticed by passers-by who called 999. Their 20-year-old brother has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

MANCHESTER’S LUCKIEST COUPLE: Nigel and Sharon Mather from Sale scooped the EuroMillions jackpot of £12.4m last Friday, in what was a very lucky week for them. In the same week they also won £10 on the National Lottery, £20 on a scratchcard and a £25 Premium Bond.
