NORTH-SOUTH HEALTH DIVIDE WIDENS: People living in the North of England are a fifth more likely to die below the age of 75 than their southern counterparts according to a study published in the British Medical Journal. Researchers at the University of Manchester found that the geographic difference in the mortality rate was at its widest for 40 years. According to the lead researcher, Professor Ian Buchan, health inequalities existed even when people were born into similar socio-economic groups. It was also found out that men were 2% more likely to be affected than women.

CITY’S ETUHU PLEADS GUILTY: Manchester City striker Kelvin Etuhu, 22, pleaded guilty to assault at Manchester Crown Court yesterday. The incident took place outside Manchester 235 Casino where Etuhu kicked a man three times. Sentencing will take place on 21 March with Etuhu being granted unconditional bail until then.

CHARITY SCAM IN TRAFFORD: Trafford Council has advised residents against leaving sacks of clothes on their doorstep after campaign group Charitybags claimed that they were often sold abroad. Their website reveals that bogus charities deprive legitimate charities of up to £10m a year as criminal gangs drive round streets in advance of the real charity collectors.

ELECTORAL MALPRACTICE IN CITY: A man has been fined £50 after distributing leaflets claiming a candidate in last year’s general election was corrupt. 232 complaints were received regarding electoral malpractice last year but the electoral watchdog and law enforcement bodies stated that the outcome of the polls was not affected.
