THE OLDEST HOUSE IN BRITAIN has been found by archaeologists at the Universities of Manchester and York. The 3.5m-diameter circular dwelling in North Yorkshire is believed to date back to 8500BC, if not earlier. Dr Chantal Conneller of the University of Manchester said: “This changes our ideas of the lives of the first settlers to move back into Britain after the end of the last ice age.”

DIY DISASTER IN RADCLIFFE: A DIY enthusiast in Radcliffe was badly burned in an explosion when fumes from tile sealant ignited, lifting the roof of his home and blowing out four windows. Michael Holding, 50, who had been working on a new kitchen, was recovering at Wythenshawe Hospital last night with 20 per cent burns to his face, feet and hands.

CARPET KEY TO MURDER: Murder detectives hope distinctive cuttings made in a carpet dumped with the body of a woman could hold the key to identifying her. Police were called to an area known as Angel Meadows between Angel Street, Dantzic Street and Miller Street on Monday afternoon, after workers discovered a human skull. The remains of the woman were excavated.

A PORTABLE LIVING ROOM made up of unwanted furniture will be set up at Chorlton Precinct on Wilbraham Road today. Manchester City Council’s waste and recycling team is working with the Ancoats-based Mustard Tree homeless charity to draw public attention to the thousands of old beds, wardrobes and sofas which end up on the tip every year. For more information, visit www.manchester.gov.uk/recycling.

Out of the window weather forecast: An unusually dark day. Try your best to stay awake.
