City news in 250 words: Wednesday 10 November

WHITWORTH DENTIST JAILED: A dentist has been sentenced to two and a half years in jail after he was found guilty of wrongly claiming more than £300,000 from the NHS. John Hudson, 58, admitted two counts of dishonesty in Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday. Patients from his Whitworth practice provided letters of support to the court before sentencing but the Judge found Hudson guilty of “calculated, blatant and persistent dishonesty”.

ILLEGAL FIREWORK SELLER IN COURT: Lee Stewart, 29, has been jailed for 12 weeks for illegally selling fireworks to under 18s from his home in Partington, Trafford. The youths pushed the fireworks through letterboxes of unsuspecting victims including an 80-year-old woman. Police raided his home and seized hundreds of fireworks but Stewart said he had stopped selling them after discovering they were being put through letter boxes.

DANCING CUSTOMERS LAND BAR £1,600 FINE: The owners of the Lounge in Hazel Grove have been fined over £1,000 for breaching their terms of licence. The town’s magistrates heard that police entered the bar and found customers dancing in a function room upstairs. As the venue had previously been warned that dancing was not allowed, a fine was handed out.

EXTRA DERBY DAY POLICE: Greater Manchester Police will have extra patrols on duty tonight ahead of the first derby of the season. Police will have a greater presence in the city centre as well as around the ground and anyone caught with alcohol in the streets in these areas will have it confiscated.

Out of the window weather forecast: Scarves are definitely the way forward on this cold November day.
