City news in 250 words: Wednesday 1 December

WORLD AIDS DAY: The Town Hall clock, the Manchester Wheel and the Spinningfields ice rink will all be lit red for the day as a sign of support for people living with HIV. Manchester is taking part in the International day of awareness with a vigil being held at St Ann’s Church, St Ann’s Square at 6pm.

SECURITY ISSUES AT AIRPORT: Manchester Airport has been criticised over its immigration security as inspectors have discovered that travellers arriving at the airport were able to avoid customs and immigrations checks. Two areas were revealed to be lacking in security and the facial recognition gates could also be compromising security.

TRAINS’ CHRISTMAS STRIKE THREAT: Northern Rail workers are being balloted about strike action in regards to their Christmas salaries. Unions believe conductors should receive double pay for working the additional bank holidays that will occur due to Christmas Day falling on a weekend. The company has been likened to Scrooge for their decision to not treat the 27 and 28 December as public holidays in relation to staff wages.

ARRESTS AT STUDENT PROTEST: Five arrests were made in the city yesterday as a result of the protest marches. Public order offences and assault of a police officer were the reasons behind the arrests. Police maintained a strong presence throughout the day’s events and helped to ensure a largely peaceful protest. The protest follows last Wednesday’s demonstration where university students and school pupils walked out of classes to protest the rise in tuition fees.

Out of the window weather forecast: We’re walking in a winter wonderland. Or slipping as the case may be.
