DOMESTIC ABUSE IS PREDICTED TO RISE during the World Cup according to Greater Manchester Police. Statistics show there to be a rise in domestic abuse during sporting events. Home Office research collated in 1996 showed a rise of 30 per cent on England match days. A Greater Manchester Police campaign, features posters of a blood-stained football shirt and the caption 'Strike-her'. The Manchester Domestic Abuse Helpline is on 0161 636 7525.

BOLTON COUNCIL WILL CUT 500 JOBS: The council will seek volunteers for retirement and redundancies from its 12,000 employees. Executive members of the authority voted in favour of the cuts to attempt to reduce its budget by £50m.

FOOTBALLERS WAGES are threatening the stability of Premier League clubs, according to a football finances report by Deloitte. During 2008 and 2009, premier league clubs spent 67 per cent of their revenues on player wages. Manchester United spent £123m and Manchester City spent £83m. Chelsea topped the wages bill, at £167m.

AIRPORT'S FRUITLESS ALLOTMENTS: Manchester airport workers have been banned from growing fruit at their workplace allotments because they may attract birds. Birds are a huge problem for the airport because of the danger of them flying into plane engines. The airport even employs security officers whose duties include scaring birds away. Around 100 members of staff have signed up for the new allotments, but they won't however be able to grow berries or trees. A spokesman said: "We have to be careful. Our wildlife officer will be monitoring the area."

Out of the window weather forecast: It's summer. It's raining. But at least you can still use your hosepipe.
