HULME DRIES UP. A ban on drinking alcohol in public places has been put in place in Hulme including dozens of streets between Princess Road, Lloyd Street and the Mancunian Way and leading up to Chorlton Road. Police officers will be able to take alcohol from anyone seen drinking in these areas. The measure ‘does not affect people drinking in their own homes or gardens, or in the beer gardens of pubs and restaurants’. ‘In their own homes’ - phew thank God for that.

HEY WE’RE in the middle of a Peace Festival. This is taking place at 8th Day Cafe, at All Saints, on Oxford Road, as part of their 40th celebrations. A WOMAN FROM FALLOWFIELD has pleaded guilty to benefit fraud after obtaining more than £17k. 31-year old Michelle Cleere was charged with fraudulently obtaining Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Income Support and was sentenced to 200 hours Community Punishment Order and ordered to pay £250 costs.

AN EXHIBITION HAS opened at Manchester Museum about the most remote city namesake of all: Manchester, Bolivia. This follows the journey of Chris Smith and Liz Peel to a village unreachable by roads in the Amazon rainforest called Manchester. Finding Manchester, Lost in Bolivia is at the Manchester Museum from 4 September 2010 - 30 January 2011.

Re the Hulme article, I never see a police officer in Hulme so how is this going to be enforced? Looks like a bunch of words and no action to me.
