UNCLE JAILED FOR LIFE: An uncle who raped and murdered his 12-year old niece was jailed for life yesterday. John Maden, 37, was supposed to be babysitting Tia Rigg in Cheetham Hill in April when he drugged and killed her before calling 999 and telling the operator “My niece has been murdered by me and I’ve just finished killing her now.” Sentencing him, Mr Justice Brian Keith said: “The only just punishment is that you must be in prison for the rest of your life.”

TEENAGER BANNED FROM CITY CENTRE: Darren Parkinson, 19, from Collyhurst, has been issued with an order from Manchester City Council banning him from going within the inner ring road of Manchester. The order follows a two-year crime spree which included him walking into a recruitment office on Lever Street and taking items from staff members' bags.

TRAMS BIG FREEZE MAKEOVER: Metrolink chiefs are trialling snorkel-style devices which could help to keep trams moving through snow and ice if we have another big freeze this winter. It’s hoped the devices will stop grit and slush getting into motors, causing trams to short-circuit.

THE BELFRY HOTEL IN TROUBLE: The luxury hotel in Wilmslow has been ordered to pay more than £125,000 after fire officers found it had a catalogue of fire hazards. The third floor did not have a single working fire alarm, other floors had faulty smoke detectors and substandard fire exits and staff had not been properly trained to deal with fires, the court heard.

Out of the window weather forecast: Could go either way really. Met Office is predicting wind and rain this afternoon but we’re going to throw caution to the wind (and rain) and predict sun. It’s all about PMA you see.
