PARKING METER charges in the city centre are increasing to £2.70 an hour next month. The hours during which on-street charges apply are being extended to 7am-7pm. The minimum 15-minute parking fee will rise from 55p to 65p. The council said the measures were designed to ‘reduce congestion’.

POLICE HUNTING stolen FA Cup semi final tickets have visited the homes of two Royal Mail workers. Nine hundred tickets for the City v United clash were stolen from a delivery van on Friday. No arrests were made but the club has warned the stolen tickets will not be usable on match day, as the barcodes on each one will be blocked.

VANDALISM in Greater Manchester is at its lowest level since 1997. There were 48,779 incidents reported to police last year, say Home Office statistics. Criminal damage has almost halved since the peak of more than 84,000 in 2001/02. Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said: “This will have a knock on effect on incidents such as criminal damage and anti-social behaviour and help keep those who live and work in the area safe.”

A MAN who died after falling from the balcony of Tiger Tiger in Manchester was set to propose to his girlfriend. Alex Lawes was due to fly to Jamaica with partner Jess Brick to celebrate her 21st birthday and ask her to marry him. Brick found the engagement ring he had bought under his bed. Lawes fell 40ft from the Printworks club’s balcony on Saturday night.

This week in 1953: ‘Busby Babe’ Duncan Edwards made his first-team debut for Manchester United. He died in 1958 following the Munich air disaster.
