STUDENT DEMO TODAY: School and university students are expected to meet in All Saints Park at 12noon. They are then likely to march into the city centre through Oxford Road and gather in Peace Gardens near the town hall. It is anticipated the event will be on a similar level to last week’s demo.
DE-ICING CAR CRIMES: As temperatures plummet further over the next few days, police are urging motorists to ensure that they are not the next victims to be caught out by car thieves, by staying with their vehicle while de-icing them on frosty mornings. Car thieves have already stolen three cars in Wigan and one in Tameside in the first two days of widespread frost coverage across Greater Manchester.
BOLTON CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU could be forced to close as a result of cuts to legal aid, according to chief executive Barry Lions. The government is planning to overhaul civil legal aid in England and Wales. Mr Lions told the BBC: “The amount of money that is threatened to be cut is so disproportionate to the hit to advice agencies and the hit to vulnerable people."
POLICE STATION ESCAPEE: A suspected thief managed to escape from custody at Greater Manchester Police’s Ashton-under-Lyne station last Friday. An internal investigation is now under way to establish how Andrew Hargreaves managed to get out after being moved from his cell to another area of the unit. The 29-year-old was arrested last Thursday in an investigation into a handbag theft in Denton.
Out of the window weather forecast: Icy yet sunny. Careful you don’t slip or burn.
