BOOZE BAN DETAILS REVEALED: A draft bylaw that would outlaw the sale of cheap alcohol and pub loyalty card schemes across Greater Manchester has been revealed. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities is set to meet on Friday to discuss plans designed to cut down on excessive drinking, improve health and cut hospital admissions.

THE BISHOP OF MANCHESTER wants the government to show compassion amid plans for a big society, with wide-ranging public spending cuts. The Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch warned that the church would not be silent on the issue. He told the BBC: "Our calling as a church, in the communities we serve and the nation to which we belong, is to make sure, by the appropriateness of our words and our actions, that compassion is not cut from our society.”

TEENAGER DIES OF NUT ALLERGY: Emma Egerton, 18, from Altrincham, died after suffering from a nut allergy whilst eating takeaway food. The teenager, a pupil at Xaverian College in Rusholme, phoned 999 when she realised the Indian meal contained nuts and left the door open for the ambulance crew to get inside. However, when paramedics arrived they were unable to revive her.

PAPER SHORTAGE AT MMU: More than 8,000 graduates have not received their degree certificates because Manchester Metropolitan University didn’t have the right paper. The delay is due to problems sourcing the high-quality parchment used for the certificates. The blunder has meant that graduates have been trying to find jobs without proper proof of their grades.

Out of the window weather forecast: It’s time to dig out your wellies and thermals again. Cold snap, complete with snow fall, is set to make a comeback.
