FLIGHTS IN THE NORTH-WEST region are expected to resume later today. Experts are reportedly still assessing the threat from a new cloud of volcanic ash, but air traffic controllers have said that some airspace may reopen. However, a spokesperson for Manchester Airport said that it is "absolutely essential" that people contacted their airline before travelling to the airport.

A STOCKPORT TAXI FIRM has been hired to take a group of business people on a 1,200-mile journey to Madrid to help them beat the airline chaos. The 21 US citizens have negotiated a £3,600 fare with Lynx Taxis which will take them to Portsmouth for a ferry across the Channel before driving them to Madrid airport.

A PATIENT'S TESTICLE was cut off by a surgeon by mistake, a General Medical Council hearing has been told. Dr Sulieman Al Hourani performed surgery to remove a cyst at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury in September 2007, but removed the whole right testicle instead. It is alleged the doctor also injected himself with a drug meant for a patient. He is accused of misconduct and also of stealing medication.

A LEGAL CHALLENGE TO A CIGARETTE BAN has been initiated by a Manchester shopkeeper with the help of a tobacco company. John Rastegar, 46, owner of Lakeland Grocers' on Deansgate, claims his business will suffer if he is forced to hide cigarettes and remove brand signs as part of government plans. He is challenging the validity of the legislation, to be phased in from 2011.

Out of the window weather forecast: bright and chilly
