TRAFFORD GENERAL HOSPITAL: which treated the first NHS patient in 1948 could be privatised. A number of options are being considered to deal with the hospital’s mounting debt, which already stands at £60million. One option being considered is merging with a neighbouring hospital, possibly Wythenshawe or Salford Royal. If this does not go ahead the hospital could be offered to private firms.

A WOMAN has been convicted of harassment after stalking Rio Ferdinand. Susanne Ibru, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne visited Ferdinand’s home at night, claiming she needed to speak to him. Ibru said she had visited Ferdinand's house four or five times during the past four years, initially making a 400 mile round trip from her home in Peckham . Ibru is yet to be sentenced.

MOSTON RESIDENTS have protested against FC United of Manchester’s bid to build a stadium on council-owned playing fields. The club wishes to build a 5,000 capacity stadium on Ronald Johnson playing fields, in New Moston, which is currently home to Moston Juniors football team. A petition against the plans has almost 1,000 signatures. FC United currently play at Bury’s Gigg Lane.

KATHERINE KELLY, the actress who plays Becky McDonald in Coronation Street is set to leave the show early next year. The character entered the show in February 2006, and has been in and out of trouble ever since. Katherine said it has been “the most blissful five years”, the producer Phil Collinson said the last few months will see Becky involved in an ‘explosive’ storyline.

This week in 1870: a complaint was made of the ‘great nuisance created by the selling of crumpets, watercress and onions’ in Salford on Sundays.
