CORRIE EXHIBITION: Throughout Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary year, photographer Rob Evans took a series of cast portraits. These photographs are now being used in an exhibition at Manchester gallery, Generation Pop until Wednesday 16 February 2011. On Thursday 17 February the gallery will hold a celebrity charity auction of the signed images with all proceeds going to the Coronation Street 50th anniversary appeal. CHEAP BOOZE BAN: The Government is set to announce plans to ban the sale of alcohol below cost price in a bid to tackle Britain's drinking problem. Shops and bars will be prevented from selling drinks for less than the tax they pay on them. Under the move the cost of a can of lager will be at least 38p, and a litre of vodka at least £10.71.

STUDENT EMA GRANTS: A survey of 348 students at Salford City College has revealed that a third may not have gone to college without education maintenance allowance grants, designed to pay for study materials and travel costs. The government is to axe the EMA, which is worth up to £30 a week, in favour of targeted support for poorer students.

LAW DODGING LANDLORDS FINED: Two private landlords have been charged a combined total of over £4000 for failing to obtain a licence. Brian Rafter of Beetham Tower, Deansgate and Mohammed Asher of Lancaster Road, Salford, were found guilty at separate hearings at Manchester Magistrates Court last week for properties with no licence in Harpurhey and Gorton.

Out of the window weather forecast: Another bright day. Get out of the office at lunchtime and take in some overdue vitamin D.
