MEN ARENA CELEBRATES 15TH BIRTHDAY: There will be a big bash to commemorate the landmark building on 15 July. Artists performing include The Hoosiers, Pixie Lott, The Script, Ellie Goulding and Taio Cruz. The event is presented by Real Radio and will benefit charities Help For Heroes, Nordoff Robins Music Therapy, The Christie Hospital and Wish Upon A Star. Tickets for the event cost £25 and can be bought online at Ticketmaster.

A GREEN CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE: Plans to set up a centre of excellence that will make Manchester a world leader in low carbon technology by 2015 have been revealed by town halls. The £4m unit will be staffed by environmental experts and local university and science teams. It will be used to test new technology and green research, and it might bring £20bn to the region.

THE COUNCIL TAX COLLECTION RATE in Manchester is lower than anywhere else in the country, according to the latest government figures. In 2009/2010, almost 10 percent of council tax owed to the town hall went unpaid. In Greater Manchester, £43m of council tax went uncollected and £30m in business rates also went uncollected.

ONE MAN REPAINTS TRINITY FOOTBRIDGE: Carl Cross has been given the task of re-coating the spire of the landmark bridge in Salford with a small roller. The 257ft long and 134ft high bridge, which goes over River Irwell, was built 15 years ago and connects The Lowry Hotel to Manchester City Centre. It requires major refurbishment every 15 years.

Out of the window weather forecast: Evidence suggests that national news of a heatwave was grossly misleading.
