LEVENSHULME BATHS is to remain after a public campaign to prevent its closure. Manchester City Council has said it will now replace the pool with a new facility instead. The council’s U-turn was confirmed by Councillor Bernard Priest who said they had received more responses on the proposed closure than any other aspect of the budget.

ARREST AFTER TRAM CRASH: A man has been arrested after the car he was driving collided with a tram on Mosley Street yesterday just before 4pm. No one was injured in the crash. Police have arrested the driver on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified. One passenger described hearing a thud and seeing debris from the car. A Metrolink spokesperson said the tram remained on the line for one hour, while police studied the scene.

MMU ADVISES AIRPORTS: Manchester Metropolitan University is to advise the world’s airports on how they can reduce their environmental impact. The university’s Centre for Air Transport and the Environment (CATE) was chosen due to the work it has previously undertaken with Manchester Airport. CATE aims to help airports reduce their overall environmental impact, rather than focusing on just noise and carbon pollution.

MANCHESTER CITY CENTRE HAS A NEW POLICE CHIEF: Steve Heywood has been appointed chief superintendant for GMP’s North Manchester Division, which includes areas to the north and east of Manchester. He has previously been involved with the Xcalibre gun crime initiative and working with the Home Office on the new National Crime Agency, focusing on combating organised crime and strengthening border policing.

Out of the window weather forecast: Bright but staying rather cold all day. Ideal for admiring daffodils, Happy St David’s Day.
