DESPITE THE SURPRISE appearance of Wayne Rooney, Manchester United are out of the Champions League after Bayern Munich defeated them on away goals. The score on the night was 3-2 to United (aggregate score 4-4). The Reds looked set to triumph after going three goals up thanks to Darron Gibson and two from Nani. Then Olic scored for Munich just before half time, Rafael was sent off, and Robben for scored a second for Munich, knocking the Reds out of the title race.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE have received new information about the whereabouts of the gun used to murder five-year-old Dillon Hull in August 1997. Dillon was shot by Paul Seddon outside his home in Bolton. His step father John Bates, a drug dealer, was the intended target. Seddon was jailed for life in 1998 but the gun used to kill Dillon has never been found.

THE INSURANCE CLAIM of a soldier from Gorton who lost the use of his left foot in Afghanistan is being investigated after he carried the Carling Cup onto the pitch at Wembley unaided. Insurance firm Abacus said it asked for 'clarification on the medical situation' after the match. Pte Tatlock took out £56-a-month private cover with Abacus before being deployed to Afghanistan.

A DISPUTE OVER anaesthetists' pay has led to cancelled heart operations at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Eleven patients who were due to have non-emergency operations have been turned away in the last two days, after bosses halved the overtime rate paid to anaesthetists.
