City news in 250 words: Thursday 7 April

WAYNE ROONEY IS OUT of the derby semi-final against Manchester City after having a two-match ban upheld. The United player was charged with using offensive language after he swore on camera after the weekend’s game against West Ham. The player had accepted the Football Association charge, but argued the automatic two-match ban was " excessive". This has been denied and the ban will take place with Rooney also missing the Fulham game.

THE PROPOSED HIGH-SPEED rail link from London-to-Birmingham (the first stage of a link to Manchester) has been given vocal support by an alliance of environmental charites including theCampaign to Protect Rural England, RSPB and Greenpeace. The alliance says there’s a case "for doing High Speed Rail well". They worry that there will be more flights and car journeys if the high-speed link initiative should fail.

THE AMARNA PRINCESS that wasn’t has come home. The fake ancient Egyptian statue is back with Bolton Museum. Originally bought for £440,000 in 2003 after the British Museum verified the statue’s age as 3,300 years old, it was later found to have been created by Shaun Greenhalgh in his Bolton shed. Greenhalgh was imprisoned for four years and eight months. Which was about the real age of the Amarna statue.

ACCORDING TO THE SUN, the Stone Roses are getting back together. Ian Brown and John Squire have buddied up again after 15 years of silence. It happened, apparently, in the unlikeliest of circumstances: during the funeral of Mani's mother, the ex-Roses bass player.

This week in 1953: Duncan Edwards made his Man U first team debut in a 4-1 defeat to Cardiff City.
