CUMBRIA SHOOTINGS: Investigations into what made a taxi driver shoot 12 people dead in Cumbria have begun. Derrick Bird, 52, embarked on a rampage that began near Whitehaven and ended when he turned a gun on himself. It is being reported that he may have been involved in a dispute over a will, and police have confirmed solicitor Kevin Commons is among the dead.

JESSIE JAMES INQUEST: Officers are now re-appealing for information about Jessie's killers, as the criminal investigation into his murder continues. 16-year-old Jessie was shot dead in Moss Side in September 2006. The inquest has delivered a verdict of unlawful killing. A £50,000 reward is available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his killers.

RED KNIGHTS HALT BID: A plan by wealthy supporters to buy Manchester United has been put on hold. The Red Knights is a group involving former Football League chairman Keith Harris and Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill. Last week the Glazer family, who own United, said they had no intention of selling.

THE CO-OP QUARTER: Town Hall chiefs have reportedly come to an agreement with the Co-operative Group to transform a corner of Manchester city centre. The £20m plan will include the re-development of 20 acres behind the MEN Arena. It will be called the Co-op quarter and include the firm’s 350,000 square foot headquarters. The Co-op is now set to launch a design competition and contract builders to the scheme, with the Co-op quarter scheduled for completion in 2012.
