SCAM ARTISTS IN WIGAN: Four separate households in Wigan and Leigh received a phone call yesterday from people claiming to offer refunds for poll or council tax overpayments. On every occasion they asked for bank details, which none of the victims gave. Police are urging residents to be vigilant when taking cold calls and challenge anyone who claims to be asking for money.

ANTI-SEMITISM IN MANCHESTER: The Community Security Trust says it recorded 639 incidents of anti-Semitism in the UK last year. Most of the incidents were reported near Jewish communities in London, Manchester, Hertfordshire and Leeds and included 114 acts of violence, according to the Jewish charity.

EIGHTEEN CHARGED OVER CHINATOWN VIOLENCE: Charges have been brought against 18 men following violence in Chinatown last June. Six men were stabbed on George Street and taken to hospital after a fight broke out. Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking officers helped in the investigation. The men, from Greater Manchester, will appear at Manchester magistrates court on 21 and 22 February.

NEVILLE RETIRES: Manchester United defender Gary Neville has announced his retirement from professional football. He said: "I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I've ever had. I am disappointed that my playing days are at an end. However, it comes to us all and it's knowing when that time is and for me that time is now." Neville, 35, made 602 appearances for United since his debut in 1992 and won a total of 85 England caps.

Out of the window weather forecast: An eye dazzling day. For once it feels good to squint.
