HOSE PIPE BAN POSSIBILITY: United Utilities is considering imposing a hosepipe ban if there is insufficient rain over the coming weeks. A spokesperson for the company, said: "It's been an unprecedented period of dry weather since December 2009, and we need to take action now so we can tap into available water resources if the dry weather continues." The company may also ask for permission to use Ennerdale Water, in West Cumbria, to boost its reservoir levels.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT has been recognised as one of the best in Europe by the Airport Council International Europe. The group identified the city, along with Barcelona, Lyon and Malta at its annual award ceremony, as leaders in their categories which included 400 airports in 46 countries. Manchester was judged the best in the 10-25 million passenger category.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY: A couple from Oldham allegedly took £16,000 from the bank account of a dead relative after they were cut out of her will, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court has heard. Gail Woodward, 47, and Barry Coogan, 54, allegedly took money from the account of Gail’s aunt, Henrietta Morgan, 88, who died in hospital in January 2008. The case continues.

BLUE MOON FOR CITY: A grass circle, bordered by a blue ceramic crescent, which will be illuminated at night, will mark the centre spot of Manchester City's historic Maine Road ground. The design, chosen by people living in Moss Side with artist Stephen Broadbent, will provide an elevated grassed area.
