EIGHT ARRESTS OVER STOLEN GOODS: The arrests took place in and around Manchester city centre as part of an ongoing police clamp down on people handling stolen goods. A number of items were seized during the raids on business and residential properties including mobile phones and games consoles.

THIEF BANNED FROM CITY CENTRE: Carlo Lanzon, 27, was described by a judge at Manchester Crown Court as a ‘scourge on motorists’ before being banned from every car park in Manchester city centre and sentenced to 18 months in prison. The ASBO and prison sentence followed a spate of thefts in the city centre by Lanzon, including breaking into 10 cars parked in the city centre between March 2009 and December 2010.

MANCHESTER CHILDREN’S SERVICES BOSS QUITS COUNCIL: Pauline Newman will become the first senior manager to go since the town hall announced plans to axe 2,000 jobs. The 59-year-old, who has been in post for more than eight years, will take voluntary early retirement. Pauline Newman said: "I have considered it carefully and with nearly nine years in Manchester, the time is right for me to leave.”

INQUIRY OVER MISSED SWINE FLU: An independent investigation is to be carried out at a Stockport hospital, after medical staff failed to spot swine flu in two children. A review this month will look into the care given to Lana Ameen and Harvey Flanagan at Stepping Hill Hospital. Both were sent home after being given treatment for other conditions. Lana, aged three, later died.
