STUDENT RAPED IN FALLOWFIELD: A 20-year-old student was dragged into a car and sexually assaulted by a man who had stopped her to ask for directions on Monday at 11pm. He abducted the woman and raped her before throwing her out onto Lombard Grove, five minutes later. The victim is now being supported by specially trained officers.

ARNDALE BRIDGE TO BE REPAIRED: The bridge which links the Arndale with Marks and Spencer and Selfridges has been closed for six months for emergency repairs. The repairs to defective glass panels will cost the city council and the Arndale £365,000 each. Councillor Pat Karney said: "This bridge is an important link between some of the busiest shops in the heart of Manchester's shopping area. We apologise for any inconvenience caused while this one-off safety work is carried out but doing nothing is simply not an option.”

NORTH/SOUTH LIFE EXPECTANCY: A study published in the British Medical Journal has said the chances of dying early - below the age of 75 - are a fifth higher in the North of England compared with the South. Researchers from the University of Manchester compared death rates from 1965 to 2008. The government said health inequalities are being addressed.

BEWARE OF BOGUS CHARITY BAGS: Trafford Council is advising people to donate unwanted clothes directly to charity shops as oppose to using doorstep charity collection bags. The advice follows reports of bogus charities issuing sacks and incidents of genuine bags being stolen. Campaign group Charitybags claim clothes are often sold abroad by criminals.

Out of the window weather forecast: The sky is blue today and full of meringue-like clouds. We love a good a good meringue.
