City news in 250 words: Thursday 11 November

ASSAULT OVER DECLINING A DRINK: A man has suffered facial fractures after he was assaulted for declining a drink in Salford. The 43-year-old victim went into The Grapes pub on Church Street, Eccles at about 8pm on Sunday 7 November. Two men approached the victim and offered to buy him a drink. The victim declined the offer, prompting the man to assaulted the victim.

BAD WEATHER FOR A BLIMP: A police surveillance balloon which cost £80,000 has been scrapped because it can’t handle Manchester’s bad weather. The helium blimp was used to watch people at large events such as last summer’s Heaton Park Oasis gigs, however it only ended up being used 18 times before it was scrapped. It has now been sold at a loss.

JUMPER ON THE BRIDGE: A man has tried to jump off a motorway bridge on the M60 near the Bredbury, Stockport, turn-off at around 7am this morning. Traffic ground to a halt for miles on the westbound carriageway because of the incident. Police managed to talk him down after about 20 minutes.

SHAUN RYDER JUSTIFIES JUNGLE: Ex-Happy Mondays star Shaun Ryder has revealed why he is going on the TV programme I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Ryder, 48, has said his six children want him to appear on the show and he wants to make them proud. He’ll join a Playboy model, Olympic medallist Linford Christie, ex-MP Lembit Opik and actor Nigel Havers on the ITV1 show which starts on Sunday.

Out of the window weather forecast: “It’s grim out there” has been the phrase said by everyone arriving at Confidential HQ today.
