City news in 250 words: Monday 7 February

THE CITY’S anti-extremism tsar, has criticised government flag ship free schools claiming they are "divisive" – according to the BBC. Ian Fenn is the council's secondary schools adviser on tolerance. He’s quoted as saying, “If you've got free schools, then a particular characteristic, be it white middle-class, Shia Muslim, born-again Christian, then you're setting up silos of mutually exclusive populations, who won't be able to connect with each other, who won't be able to converge in the way that I think we need to.”

POLICE HAVE SENT personal letters - says the Manchester Evening News - to 40 suspected football hooligans ahead of this week’s derby clash. The hooligans are being informed that they are being watched. 300 police will be on duty for the 157th United v City match. City closed the gap on United this weekend, with a 3-0 home victory over West Bromwich Albion at Eastlands. United lost their unbeaten Premiership run losing 2-1 to Wolves at Molineux.

THE CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS in Manchester over the weekend passed off well. Thousands gathered to help the Chinese community celebrate with stalls, food and the traditional dragon. 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit: people born in this year are ‘articulate, talented, ambitious, virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste’. Sadly they may also get their feet cut off as lucky charms.

AFFLECKS PALACE’s revival continues with a new shop called Woodchip, stocking one-off reworked vintage clothing and handmade leather handbags. Prices start from £4 and go up to £100.

Out of the window forecast: On Saturday we built an ark and started getting the animals on two by two. Today it’s still a bit grey but we’ve offloaded them for the time being – while the rain lets up.
