TWO COUNCILS in Greater Manchester admit their budgets will not be big enough to repair all their roads. Rochdale estimates it will cost £65m to fully repair all of its roads, but only £250,000 has been allocated in its budget for potholes. Trafford was the other local authority to admit a shortfall. The government is making a fund of £100m available to councils that want to bid for repairs.

HUNDREDS OF families protested outside Manchester Town Hall over the weekend, as a response to the council’s decision to cut £8m from Sure Start children’s centres. The council wants to hand over the facilities to schools, voluntary bodies and private companies. Any that cannot be outsourced will be scrapped.

A CITY CENTRE sewer has been contaminated by a dangerous chemical that can be highly toxic and flammable when it reaches a certain temperature. The chemical was released into the sewer after thieves tried to steal the cab of a tanker and mistakenly opened a valve, releasing the chemical. It has now solidified and currently poses no risk to public safety.

THE BBC is set to broadcast a reconstruction of a rape that occured an alley next to Manchester Town Hall to try and catch the offender. The attack occurred on 31 October last year. The police want to trace a white male aged 20 - 30, who had a medium to athletic build and was wearing a light top and jeans. The reconstruction will be shown on Crimewatch tonight at 9pm.

Out the window weather forecast: A brighter start to the week remaining dry through to the evening. Don’t let the sun fool you, it’s still chilly.
