MAN DIES IN CANAL: A 66-year-old man drowned after he fell into the Rochdale Canal. John Nicholls was captured on CCTV climbing on to Lock 84, near Piccadilly Basin, before falling in. His body was found by passers-by. Greater Manchester Police said safety should be improved around the towpath.

FERGIE BLASTS ‘DIFFICULT’ AGENTS: Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claims footballers’ agents are the problem – not the players. Following United’s win over Stoke, Sir Alex told reporters: “When your top players come towards the end of their contracts you have to do something to get them a new one. You have to deal with agents of this world today which is difficult. The players are no problem.”

ARTS SPEND REVIEW: Arts funding in Greater Manchester is set to be scrutinised, following last week’s spending review. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) dishes out a total of £3.7m in grants to 38 local arts organisations, including the Cornerhouse in Manchester. A meeting on October 29 will argue that the funding levels are no longer sustainable. A review could start before the end of the year

TRAM FARES TO RISE: Metrolink fares will increase by up to 7.3 per cent. The extra cash will pay for improving the tram network. Councillor Ian Macdonald, chair GMITA, said: "There is no ideal time to increase fares but any change will always be the least it can be to meet the growing costs of running, improving and expanding the network.”

Out of the window weather forecast: Clear skies, a chill in the air and a smell of burning across the city centre this morning. What is that smell?
