POSSIBLE CHEAP ALCOHOL BAN: Council chiefs are hoping to create a new bylaw that would make it illegal to sell alcohol for less than 50p a unit. If this occurs, Greater Manchester would be the first place in the country to implement such a rule. There are worries that the bylaw, which would aim to reduce excessive drinking, might instead encourage people to buy cheap booze in bulk.

DROUGHT CLOSES CANAL: A 60-mile stretch of the 127-mile Leeds-Liverpool canal has been closed in order to save water. British Waterways warned of the closure last month and said that it may take several weeks before the canal is reopened. The closure stretches from Wigan, Greater Manchester to Gargrave in North Yorkshire.

SKY RIDE SUCCESS: An estimated 20,000 cyclists turned up to the second annual Sky Ride in Manchester City Centre. A 12-kilometre route, which included all the city's most famous landmarks between Sportcity and Castlefield, was close off to cars for the cyclists. Among those participating in the event were actress Gemma Atkinson and cyclists Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton.

UNITED PLAYER IN CAR ACCIDENT: Anderson was involved in a car crash in Portugal and had to be dragged out from a flaming Audi R8. The accident occurred on Saturday morning after the 22-year-old midfielder had spent the evening at a nightclub. A Brazilian woman and another man were also involved in the accident. After the crash they were treated at Braga Hospital and only suffered minor injuries.

Out of the window weather forecast: A glimmer of hope as the sun peers through. Maybe that big grey cloud hovering above has a silver lining after all.
