Ashes to Ashes, fast Ethiopians and the flowering of King Street

ASHES TO ASHES, dust up to dust up. The naughty volcano from Iceland stopped flights over the weekend with its ash cloud and although restrictions at Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool airports have been lifted, it seems as though the thing might swish back towards us very soon. So if you do go to Manchester Airport it might be wise to pack a sleeping bag and take some sandwiches.

ETHIOPIAN, HAILE GEBRSELASSIE, 37, won this Sunday's Great Manchester run in 28 mins two secs. This is the third time he's triumphed. The event, involving 36,000 runners, has grown into one of the biggest 10k events in the world after its launch in 2003 with 10,000 participants. The spectator crowds were said to be bigger than last year as well.

WANDERER, Stefan Motoaca Dumitru, 24, has been charged with the rape of an 89-year-old woman in Greater Manchester. The woman was attacked in Levenshulme in April, Dumitru was arrested in Merseyside and is of no fixed address. He has been charged with two counts of rape and one count of burglary.

KING STREET BLOSSOMS. With almost a third of its shops empty, King Street, once the jewel in the Manchester retail crown, will be blossoming from this Thursday for a couple of weeks. The City's Spring Markets will be transforming it into an English Garden fete complete with bunting, flowers and old fashioned 'pop'. Perhaps this may encourage the premises owners in the street to promote their empty units at reasonable rents.

Out of the window weather forecast: The sky look like a painting by Constable, there's blue sky and clouds like castles. Looks like it might rain though, later perhaps.
