13-YEAR-OLD STABBED: Police are trying to trace a man who they believe was responsible for an attack in which a 13-year-old boy was stabbed. The teenager suffered a stab wound to his back and his rottweiler was killed in Cherry Lane, Sale, on Saturday. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said he remains in a "fairly stable" condition at Wythenshawe Hospital.

UNI STUDENT FOUND DEAD: Rory Topping, 20, has been found dead at his university accommodation. The student was in his third year of a course in American Studies at the University of Manchester and was known for his tennis skills , having represented Jersey in 2005. A post-mortem examination is due later but police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances.

DERBY DAY ARRESTS: Nineteen people were arrested during the Manchester United and Manchester City derby match, according to police. Sixteen people were arrested on suspicion of a variety of offences including drunkenness, public order and ticket touting, but the force thanked fans for their overall good behaviour.

MOCK TERRORIST ATTACK: 150 firefighters from north-west England and Northern Ireland took part in an exercise simulating a terrorist attack at Lancashire Fire Service's training centre in Washington Hall, Euxton. The scenario involved a simulated hijack, air crash and radiation leak. Teams from Greater Manchester, Isle of Man, Lancashire, Merseyside and Northern Ireland took part as well as firefighters from BAE and Sellafield.
