City news in 250 words: Monday 13 December

ONLY ONE council in Greater Manchester will reduce the salary of its chief executive in the wake of government spending cuts. Bury council will cut its next chief executive’s pay by £13,000 when Mark Sanders steps down next year. Manchester said the idea was a ‘gimmick’; Salford said cuts ‘weren’t very likely.’

TWENTY-THREE SURVIVORS of the recent Chilean mine disaster will be at Old Trafford tonight to watch Manchester Utd take on Arsenal as VIP guests of the club. The men were trapped underground for more than two months before being rescued. Former Reds legend Sir Bobby Charlton said: ‘These are the same people that the whole world dropped everything for. We’re all very proud.’ The trip was organised by Chilean wine producer Concha Y Toro, which sponsors the club.

EIGHT PEOPLE were injured in an explosion at a Tesco store in Walkden, Salford, on Sunday. The explosion might have come from the bakery area when a pipe in a fridge burst. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service had to evacuate the area.

WORKERS at the Heinz Baked Beans factory in Wigan will strike for 24 hours this week in pay protests. The strike will start on Wednesday evening after union members rejected a pay offer of 3.3 per cent this year and 3 per cent the following year. Heinz said the outcome of the ballot was "very disappointing".
