THREE-YEAR-OLD BOY STARTS HOUSE FIRE: McKenzie Foster was playing with a cigarette lighter at his home in Pendleton, Salford, when he set his mother's bedroom alight. His family were unaware of the fire until Mitchell, his little brother alerted their eldest sister Rebecca who ensured that their home was evacuated. The house is severly damaged and the family are now taking shelter at St Paul's Church, Broadwalk.

RACE FOR LIFE: About 10,500 women took part in the Manchester leg of the Cancer Reseach fundraiser this year at Heaton Park. The event, which is a charity run in memory of cancer victims, is the largest women-only fundraising series. Organisers hope that the event, which included a flagship race, a 5k race and a 10k race, will raise £649,000 for the charity.

POLICE TOLD TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Chief Constable Peter Fahy is forcing officers to use buses, trams and trains instead of driving patrol cars in order to save money. This policy comes as the Greater Manchester force tries to meet its £6.9m budge cut. It will see the force's fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles cut by 10 percent over the next year.

MORE POLICE PATROLS IN SOUTH MANCHESTER SUBURB: Greater Manchester Police will increase their presence in Chorlton after staff at The Bar on Wilbraham Road were confronted by a man with an iron bar. The man threatened the workers and got away with some money. This is the latest incident in a spate of robberies around the area.

Out of the window weather forecast: Too windy to use an umbrella and too wet not too. Just another one of life's dilemmas.
